General Specifications
Overview
The Narada MPG 12V is a Maintenance-Free, Pure Gel lead-acid battery designed for deep-cycle applications. It is part of Narada’s professional series, renowned for its long service life, exceptional reliability, and stable performance. The “G” in MPG stands for Gel technology, where the electrolyte is immobilized in a silica gel, making it spill-proof and leak-proof.
Key Specifications & Technology
-
Voltage: 12 Volts DC
-
Technology: Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) with Gel electrolyte.
-
Terminals: Heavy-duty stud terminals (typically M8), suitable for high-current applications and secure connections.
-
Construction: Sealed, maintenance-free design with a pressure relief valve (recombinant technology).
Key Characteristics
-
Deep-Cycle Capability: The primary feature. It is designed to be repeatedly discharged down to 20% Depth of Discharge (DOD) and deeply recharged without significant degradation. This is essential for applications like solar energy storage where daily cycling occurs.
-
Maintenance-Free Operation: The gel electrolyte does not require watering or checking specific gravity, unlike flooded batteries.
-
Spill-Proof & Can Be Mounted in Any Orientation: The immobilized gel electrolyte means the battery can be installed on its side (except inverted) without risk of leakage, offering flexibility in tight spaces.
-
Low Self-Discharge Rate: Can be stored for longer periods without needing a frequent recharge.
-
Excellent Rechargeability: High charge acceptance and efficient conversion of charging current into stored energy.
-
Long Service Life: When used within its specifications, it offers a long float and cycle life, often rated for 1800+ cycles at 50% DOD.
Available Capacities
The Narada MPG 12V line comes in various capacities to suit different energy needs. Common capacities include:
-
50Ah (e.g., Model RNG-GEL-50-12)
-
100Ah (e.g., Model RNG-GEL-100-12)
-
150Ah
-
200Ah
(Always confirm the exact model number with the supplier, as product lines can be updated.)
Advantages
-
High Reliability & Long Life: Built with high-quality materials and robust plates for extended cycle life.
-
Zero Maintenance: No need to add water, ever.
-
Safety: The gel technology minimizes the risk of acid spills and corrosion, and reduces gassing.
-
Vibration Resistant: Well-suited for mobile applications like RVs and marine use.
-
Stable Performance: Less susceptible to sulfation compared to standard AGM batteries if left in a partially charged state.
Disadvantages / Considerations
-
Higher Cost: Gel batteries are typically more expensive than equivalent AGM or flooded batteries.
-
Charging Sensitivity: Requires a correct charging profile. It needs a charger/inverter with a “Gel” or “GEL/Vented” setting. Using a standard “AGM” or “Flooded” charge profile can undercharge or overcharge the battery, reducing its lifespan.
-
Weight: Like all lead-acid batteries, it is very heavy (e.g., a 100Ah model can weigh ~30-35 kg / 65-75 lbs).
-
Not for High-Power Engine Starting: While it can deliver high current, it is optimized for sustained, deep-cycle use, not for the very short, ultra-high cranking amps needed for large engine starting.
Common Applications
The Narada MPG 12V is a premium battery chosen for critical and demanding applications:
-
Solar Energy Storage Systems (Off-grid and Hybrid systems)
-
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) for servers and telecom
-
Telecommunications Base Stations
-
RV, Marine, and Camping Power
-
Electric Mobility (Golf Carts, Floor Cleaning Machines)
-
Security and Alarm Systems
Comparison with Other Technologies

| Maintenance | Zero | Zero | Regular Watering Required |
| Deep Cycle Life | Excellent | Very Good | Good (with maintenance) |
| Spill-Proof | Yes | Yes | No |
| Cost | High | Medium | Low |
| Charge Voltage | Strict Profile Required | Tolerant | Tolerant |
Summary
The Narada MPG 12V is a high-end, deep-cycle gel battery designed for users who prioritize longevity, reliability, and maintenance-free operation in cyclic applications. It is an excellent choice for solar power systems, backup power, and mobile living where its superior cycle life and safety characteristics justify the higher initial investment. The key to maximizing its lifespan is to use a compatible charge controller/inverter programmed specifically for Gel batteries
